Detention/Retention Ponds

Designed to detain water for a specific amount of time, usually, until the water level recedes below the outlet pipe or until it can be released slowly back into the surrounding environment.

Common Problems & Available Solutions

To reinforce the slopes of a detention pond, you can use hard armor or soft armor solutions. Hard armor involves using rigid materials such as rock or concrete to create a stable surface on the slope. Soft armor involves using flexible materials such as vegetation or geosynthetics to stabilize the slope. Vegetated slopes are a common practice for this application. Consult with a GEO Pro to ensure your vegetation is adequated supported by a reinforcement system, as well as proper growing environment.

Structural walls are a great way to reduce the footprint of a detention pond, granting you the abillity to gain detention volume by cutting back the slope vertically. For design, consider factors such as the size and shape of the pond, the type of soil and site conditions, the desired height and stability of the wall, and any regulatory requirements. Our team of engineers is at the ready for your grade separation needs.

What are Detention/Retention Ponds?

A detention pond is a man-made water retention structure that is designed to store stormwater runoff. These ponds are typically used in urban areas to prevent flooding and protect against erosion. They work by temporarily holding excess water during heavy rainfall events, and then slowly releasing it back into the environment at a controlled rate.

Threats of flucuating water elevations and incoming stormwater require that the side slopes remain intact during heavy storm events. Geosynthetics and erosion control solutions can ensure that the pond mitigates as much erosion and soil loss as possible, while maintaining adequate vegetation. Detention ponds should be properly protected, as they are an important tool for managing stormwater and mitigating the negative effects of urbanization on natural water systems.
