What is Streambank Stabilization?

Streambank stabilization is the process of reinforcing the banks of a stream or river to prevent erosion and landslides. These hazards can be caused by a variety of factors, including the flow of water, the composition of the soil, and the presence of vegetation.

To stabilize a streambank, a variety of techniques may be used, including the construction of revetments, the use of vegetation, and the placement of erosion control structures, such as hard armor/concrete-based solutions. Revetments are sloping structures that are placed along the bank of a stream and are designed to dissipate the energy of flowing water. Vegetation, such as grass, trees and shrubs, can also be used to anchor the soil and reduce erosion. Erosion control structures, such as gabions or riprap, are used to protect the streambank from erosion by breaking up the flow of water and dissipating its energy. These techniques can be used individually or in combination to stabilize the streambank and prevent erosion.
